"I grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota in a Polish-American community which has shaped me into the person I am today," explains Sylvia, 22. "I went to Chicago to study fine arts focused on drawing and painting at Loyola University, where I really discovered myself as an artist and as an individual for the first time—unconfined by the small school and community I grew up with."
Though she's a Midwesterner through and through, "I've always been inspired by Parisian style. My shopping philosophy is pretty simple. If I can see myself wearing it in many different outfits and to lots of events, it's a great find. Sometimes I'll leave the store or website without purchasing, and if I absolutely cannot stop thinking about the item, I'll go back and get it. Good deals are something my mom ingrained in me from a young age. When we went shopping at the Gap—our favorite store when I was little—we would always immediately go to the clearance section." Below, the good deals that have caught her eye lately.
Cole Haan Nitasha Bootie
"A good pair of black boot heels are a must. It doesn't really matter where you get them. So long as they are leather—never suede—you're set. I've been wearing my favorites for almost two years now and the back heel is going a bit, but I think we have one more season together. Nothing elevates an outfit quite like a good black boot heel."
BUY: $130 at Cole Haan
Black Denim Moto Jacket
"Growing up in Minnesota, I always saw outerwear simply as a way to keep yourself warm. Very utilitarian. When I moved to Chicago, I started playing around a bit more with wearing coats for fashion and now I absolutely cannot be stopped. If I come across a good coat at the thrift store, I can't resist. My current favorite is this Bill Blass black jean jacket I got from my mom's closet. It's probably 20 to 25 years old. It has an oversized biker jacket cut to it, so it always makes me feel like a badass."
BUY: $45 at Forever 21
FYI: Sylvia recommends checking out thrift stores ("vintage is always the best" when it comes to quality jean jackets, she says) but this one from F21 is a good option, too.
Mejuri Boss Signet Ring
"I've been a fan of Mejuri for a long time. After I bought my first pair of dome hoop earrings, I was hooked. I'm a member of the Fine Crew and I worked at the Mejuri Chicago pop-up store, so if you ever want to chat jewelry, dm me. I always wear the boss signet ring I bought for myself as a birthday present and the engravable bar necklace my hunny gave me for Valentine's Day. It says 'kochanie' which translates to "my love" in Polish. Being in the Fine Crew means I also have a link for friends and followers to get 10% off, if you want to shop with me."
BUY: $245 at Mejuri
Michael Stars Lesley Buttondown
"I think a good texture really elevates an outfit, whether it's corduroy, a heavy knit sweater, or a silky button-down shirt. My favorite silk shirt is sold out, since I buy almost everything on sale (lol), but it's from Anthropologie and the quality is amazing. This one's similar, but mine is silk in the front, while the back is a stretchy cotton material. It's super breathable and comfortable. "
Glossier Priming Moisturizer Rich
"I worked at the Glossier Chicago pop-up, where my obsession was really fueled. I even run a @dogsofglossier Instagram account. A skincare product I cannot live without is the Priming Moisturizer Rich. It's the most luxurious-feeling heavy moisturizer and I can't imagine my skincare routine without it. My favorite makeup product from Glossier is the Lash Slick mascara. It's the best lengthening mascara that makes my lashes look like they're extensions."
BUY: $35 at Glossier
Bright Yellow Statement Purse
"You'll rarely see me without my bright yellow rectangle purse. I've never been much of a fashion purse type of gal. I wear one purse until it starts falling apart. My current purse is a beautiful bright yellow. It always adds a great pop of color to any outfit, plus yellow is my favorite color. Sometimes I wear my yellow jacket or pants as well and look a little crazy, but that's okay! Yellow is the color of happiness, and I'm happy to be wearing it."
FYI: Slyvia found hers at TJ Maxx, but this Kurt Geiger London box bag is a great approximation.
